Working With Horses
Studies reveal that horses are a great addition to the treatment process. Thus, Royal Recovery Resources hopes to introduce exposure to the benefits of working with horses in an activity setting unique to transitional living. Horses do not know what we have done in the past or what we are going to do tomorrow; they are present in the moment with us.
Working with horses is a beneficial hobby that instills work ethic. They have a powerful capacity to positively influence and help people in many different ways. It teaches responsibility as you are taking care of an animal and its surroundings. Caring for the horse, the equipment, the stable, cleaning duties, grooming, washing, and feeding the horse are common tasks. You are constantly learning new ways to control a large animal. You are practicing and learning techniques that enable the horse to respond to your communications. Skills are developed that increase confidence and self-esteem.
Through Royal Recovery Resources Horse Activities, experience will be gained working with the Standard Breed Harness Horse.

Horses are known to have the ability to sense the suppressed feelings of people around them. This natural ability of horses can help people confront feelings that can feel unmanageable without substances to mask them. It is hoped that the spirit of the bond with horses can help break down emotional and mental barriers and promote well-being. Horses provide inner strength that gradually persists within the person whom is in contact with the horse.
Fear can diminish as self-confidence increases as one works with the initially intimidating large, powerful horse. This ability to overcome and grow is similar to many day-to-day life experiences. Horses are social animals that like fellow horses and having fun. Within their herds they have roles and responsibilities similar to people. Each horse is unique in personality, attitude, mood, demeanor, and learning style. This horse-human relationship is much like the dynamic of human relationships.
Working with horses involves being mentally and physically in tune with the process. This mimics the process of growth in recovery. Change isn’t instant or easy, it requires an investment of time, open mindedness, and willingness.
Horses communicate through body language. Human’s body language affects the horses’ behavior because this is also the primary means of communication with humans. They respond and react based upon changes within or actions performed. The horse many times replicates the message they perceive from human body language such as stubbornness, discomfort, anxiety, happiness, and serenity. Working through the feelings that surface from the horse relationship can help with working through emotional responses with others. Changes in human response can be sensed by the horse and you will witness the way the horse reacts different to you based upon the way you interact and adapt.
